The vacancies in the Election Commission of India will be filled by the appointment of two new election commissioners before March 15. The final selection of the appointees will be made by the search and selection committees, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and officially appointed by the President.
According to sources, the Election Commission of India is expected to appoint two new election commissioners by March 15 to replace Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, who retired and resigned unexpectedly, respectively.
The Union law minister Arjun Ram Megwal will lead a search committee, which will include the cabinet secretaries of the home department and department of personnel and training. This committee will be responsible for creating two distinct panels, each consisting of five names, for the two available positions. This process is in accordance with Union law.
Afterwards, a committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and including a Union minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, will choose two individuals to serve as election commissioners. The President will then officially appoint these two individuals after the committee makes its decision.
According to PTI, the selection committee plans to hold a meeting on either March 13 or 14, depending on the availability of its members.
The recent implementation of the new legislation regarding the selection of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners has taken effect. Previously, the Chief Justice of India was also a part of this procedure.
With the Lok Sabha polls approaching in a matter of weeks, the departure of Arun Goel has resulted in the reduction of the three-member poll panel to only Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
The election commissioner, Anup Chandra Pandey, reached the age of 65 and retired on February 14.
