J&K election: Omar Abdullah says National Conference MLAs would select the legislative party leader tomorrow. Abdullah was cited by PTI as saying, “Tomorrow at 12:30pm, the legislature party will meet to elect their leader.” “There will then be a meeting of the alliance partners to elect their leader in the House,” the speaker continued. Next, we will proceed to Raj Bhavan to assert our right to establish a government and request that the lieutenant governor schedule the swearing-in ceremony. The NC ran for 51 of the 90 assembly seats available in the Union territory; it awarded 32 to the Congress, its partner; the CPI(M) and the Panthers Party each received one. The two senior partners engaged in a “friendly” competition over five seats. According to the Election Commission, the National Conference emerged as the single-largest party with 42 wins, including two seats for Omar Abdullah. The BJP came in second with 29 victories. The alliance easily exceeded the majority threshold of 46 seats with 49, with the Congress gaining six and the CPI(M) securing the lone seat awarded to it. Abdullah, a former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, is expected to be appointed as the NC and alliance’s legislative party leader, regaining his position as chief minister. Jammu and Kashmir held its first legislative elections in ten years on September 18, 25, and October 1.
