The 96th Academy Awards saw Oppenheimer as the big winner, with Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr. all taking home awards for their roles in the film. The movie, titled “Oppenheimer’s Big Bang,” also won for Best Picture. (Image credit: Getty)
Oppenheimer emerged victorious at the 96th Academy Awards by claiming seven out of the 13 Oscars it was nominated for. The movie took home the awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), and Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.). It also won Best Original Score and various technical awards. Unfortunately, Killers Of The Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone missed out on making history as the first indigenous Best Actress at the Oscars, with the award instead going to Emma Stone for Poor Things, which also won three other Oscars. Da’Vine Joy Randolph was honored as the Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Holdovers, completing her successful awards season sweep.
The awards for Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplay were given to Anatomy Of A Fall and American Fiction, respectively. Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell received the award for Best Original Song with their track What Was I Made For? from the movie Barbie. Despite being nominated for eight Oscars, this was the only win for the film.
The Indian viewers were delighted to witness the debut of RRR in a reel that paid tribute to stunt performers, followed by the recognition of Nitin Chandrakant Desai, the art director, in the Memoriam segment.
The movie 2018: Everyone Is A Hero from India was chosen as the official entry, but it was eliminated during the shortlist stage for nominations. Another film, To Kill A Tiger, set in India, was in the running for the Best Documentary Feature category, but it was ultimately beaten by 20 Days In Mariupol.
This year’s Oscar nominations garnered attention for three significant exclusions. The director and lead star of Barbie, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, as well as actor Leonardo DiCaprio from Killers Of The Flower Moon, were snubbed.
Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Oscars for the fourth time, with notable moments including John Cena’s humorous presentation of the Best Costume Design award while dressed in a nearly-naked state, Ryan Gosling’s popular performance of “I’m Just Ken” with assistance from his Barbie co-stars and musician Slash, and Robert Downey Jr’s comical acceptance speech where he jokingly referred to his wife Susan Levin as his “veterinarian”. The ceremony was held at the Oscars and was attended by several celebrities.
